Born in Le Sueur, Minn., and raised in the Fargo and Grand Forks, N.D. area, Dunn attended Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., where he competed at the Division III level for the Cobbers in both cross country and track and field. He graduated in May 2011 with a B.A. in Communication Studies and a Coaching minor. While at Concordia, Dunn assisted with recruiting for both cross country and track and field.
Coach Dunn is currently in his third year coaching Bethany's women's and men's cross country and track and field teams.
In 2016, Coach Dunn led the women's cross country team to its best team finish in program history (3rd out of 9 teams with 81 points). The women’s team followed up with a fifth place finish in 2017. The men’s cross country team showed significant improvement in 2017, finishing in fifth place with 153 points compared to a seventh place finish with 200 points in 2016. In three years, the Vikings have turned in eight UMAC All-Conference performances at the championship meet which includes two First Team performances and six Second Team. Additionally, 33 cross country athletes have earned Academic All-Conference under Coach Dunn in three seasons.
In his third season at the helm for Indoor Track and Field, Dunn coached seven individuals to UMAC All-Conference honors and six individuals to UMAC event championships. The men’s team had two athletes receive UMAC All-Conference honors and the women’s team had five athletes receive the honor. Altogether, in three seasons, 15 athletes have received UMAC All-Conference honors in three years and eight have won UMAC championships.
The men's indoor track and field team has achieved 127 marks/times out of the 203 current top 10 marks and 17 of the programs 26 school records since Coach Dunn's arrival. Additionally, under Coach Dunn's leadership, the women's indoor track and field team has attained 170 marks/times out of the 208 current top 10 marks and 24 of the programs 26 school records. In 2017, the women's indoor track and field team posted their best finish in program history (3rd out of 6 teams with 132.5 points).
Most recently, Coach Dunn completed his 2nd outdoor track and field season with continued success. In two years, Dunn has coached the men's outdoor program to 15 of 24 current school records and 95 top 10 marks/times. Dunn has coached the women's outdoor program to 21 of 25 current school records and 151 top 10 marks/times out of 210 current top marks/times. The women finished the outdoor season with a 2nd place finish with 156 points in the conference championship (best finish in program history). For his efforts, Coach Dunn was named UMAC Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Coach of the Year by his peers.
Coach Dunn has now coached eight athletes to 21 all-conference indoor/outdoor track and field finishes while at Bethany Lutheran College. Furthermore, he has coached 4 individuals to 5 outdoor conference titles and 3 individuals to 3 indoor conference titles.
Dunn's experience after Concordia started in Nanchang, China, as the head track and field coach and teacher at Nanchang Institute of Technology University. Here he was able to lead the team to a fifth place finish at the provincial championship. Following China, he had coaching stints at Shanley High School and Oak Grove Lutheran High School, both in Fargo, ND helping coach athletes to the state championship. From 2013-2015, Dunn was an assistant coach for both cross country and track and field at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash., where he earned his M.A. in Sports Administration. While coaching at Gonzaga, Michael worked with both men's and women's programs and helped coach multiple mid-distance and distance athletes to the NCAA DI Regional and the first Gonzaga athlete to the NCAA DI National Championship.
Michael currently resides in Mankato, MN with his wife Nicole and daughter Sloan.
